Rebuttal
to ConsumerLab.com review of breast enhancement supplements. (April
2002)
A report recently released by the FDA entitled “Breast Implants
and Information Update 2000” states that potential risks of breast
implants include “…reoperations and local perioperative [right
after surgery] complications frequent enough to be a cause of
concern… Complications may have risks themselves, such as pain,
disfigurement, and serious infection and they may lead to medical
and surgical interventions that have risks…such as the effects
of anesthesia, infection, swelling, redness, bleeding and there
are complications specific to breast implants. These complications
[include] capsular contraction when the scar tissue or capsule
that normally forms around the implant tightens and squeezes the
implant…Additional surgery may be needed to correct the capsular
contraction…Capsular contraction may happen again after this additional
surgery…” The article also stresses that “Breast implants are
not lifetime devices…Some deflate or rupture in the first few
months after being implanted [or] after several years…”
If Consumer Labs.com has a ‘mission’ shouldn’t it be keeping consumers
informed of real risks rather than disseminating biased and inaccurate
reports on safe herbal alternatives to the potentially devastating
surgical procedure that almost 250,000 women are now choosing
to undergo?
The majority of herbal and vitamin supplements available to consumers
today were first marketed on the basis of anecdotal evidence supplied
by decades, and in the case herbs, centuries of usage and purely
anecdotal accounts of efficacy. These anecdotal accounts were
the foundation for thousands of clinical and laboratory studies
conducted over the last few decades that have provided scientific
reinforcement supporting the effectiveness of herbal and vitamin
supplements.
Many pharmaceutical drugs, such as Ritalin, are prescribed on
the basis of anecdotal evidence; researchers are not always certain
of the precise mechanism behind the effect of particular drugs,
but they are marketed for use, nonetheless, based on observation
of effectiveness. Therefore, to simply discount the anecdotal
evidence in the case of herbal supplements to augment bust fullness
and breast health is absurd.
TriMedica, Inc. does provide anecdotal support for its herbal
bust enhancement product, GroBust, in its marketing literature,
bibliographies and upon request. Clinicals were conducted on GroBust
over a period of two years, from 1997-1999 by Dr. Bradford of
the Bradford Institute in California, and the results of these
studies are available on the website GroBust.com and in the marketing
literature for the product. Additionally, a double-blind, placebo-controlled
study on GroBust is presently being conducted by a fully accredited
research institute in Miami, Florida. The researcher heading up
the study is affiliated with the University of Miami. Data captured
during the study will include changes in breast size, body weight,
mood states, PMS related symptoms, acceptance of product use,
adverse events and blood testing.
GroBust, introduced more than four years ago, was the first herbal
breast enhancement product on the market. Several hundred thousand
bottles of the capsules and liquid product have been sold. The
extensive market use of the product has produced remarkably strong
anecdotal support of effectiveness that sparked the resultant
flooding of the market with knock-off products that regrettably
have none of the market proving, supportive literature or testing
that characterizes GroBust. Nevertheless, Consumer Labs’ blatantly
biased reporting on the efficacy of herbal breast enhancement,
in itself, has no basis in fact. Double blind studies have never
been, and are not now, the only criteria for determining supplement
or drug efficacy, nor have they apparently taken the time to thoroughly
review the historical literature or anecdotal evidence on the
use of herbs in bust enhancement and breast health.
